FAQ
How do you make money?
Short answer: We don’t! All Collective members work on a strictly volunteer basis and 100% of funds donated to us continue on to another non-profit. We do receive 1% interest on donated funds via our Capital One savings account and this money is used to cover costs of operations: web hosting, legal requirements, etc.
Why are you doing this? What’s in it for you?
Too often, donations go into the "black hole" of large charities where the donor has no idea if their donation ever made an impact. If people get clarity on the impact of their donation, we believe they will donate more and the world will be a slightly better place!
Is Duo Collective registered anywhere? How do I know Duo Collective is legit?
Duo Collective is registered as a non-profit corporation in the State of California and has 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Our IRS verification can be checked here and our California registration can be found here by searching "Do Unto Others Collective."
Which non-profits are eligible to receive funds from you?
Any 501(c)(3) non-profit is eligible to receive funds from the collective. However, the Board reserves the right to veto donations to hate groups.
Where is Duo Collective physically located?
We call beautiful San Francisco, California home but we have members as far away as the United Kingdom.
How do you decide which charities receive the donations?
We don’t choose the charities, you do! Any Duo Collective member can nominate any 501(c)(3) non-profit to receive donations from the collective. Once a year, membership votes where our collected funds go and funds are then distributed proportionally based on votes received.
How does the voting process work?
Voting is easy! During the year, Collective members nominate non-profits to vote on. Then, during the month of October, Collective members vote to give nominated charities. Members will have full transparency about exactly how much money is going to each charity they choose
What happens to my money if I don't vote?
If you choose not to vote during the voting time period, your votes will be distributed proportionally to the charities chosen by other Collective members
What does Duo Collective do with my money before it gets donated?
Duo Collective has partnered with Capital One to hold funds in a secure savings account until disbursements are made. We receive approximately 1% APR on these funds to cover costs of running the collective (web hosting, legal registrations, etc)
How do I become a member?
Becoming a member is easy! Find a current member to sponsor your application and fill out the form found at the bottom of this page. Upon approval and payment of the yearly donation, you are a member!
What do you screen for in membership applications?
We screen to make sure that our community remains friendly, loving, and non-political. For example, if you are a member of the KKK or the Aryan Resistance, Duo Collective is not going to be a good fit. We do not screen on the basis of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or any other similar metrics
